Snowdough Recipe

Snowdough Recipe

The perfect homemade holiday fun that is two ingredients and tons of fun for your kids! You do not have to be crafty to pull this off–it’s mixing two things together in a bowl. Bonus: It smells good.

Prep time: 2 minutes

Make time: 5-8 minutes

Total time: 7-10 minutes

Makes about 1 cup worth of snow dough

Note: Not edible

  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup hair conditioner (do NOT use your expensive salon conditioner, ladies. Go get the cheap stuff at Target! I used Pantene Pro-V).

Optional:

  • Glitter
  • Sequins
  • Food coloring
  • Cookie cutters
  • In a medium mixing bowl, add 1 cup of cornstarch and 1/2 cup of hair conditioner. Mix together until it becomes tough to stir. If it’s too sticky, add a little more cornstarch. If it’s too dry (flaking or crumbly), add in more conditioner.
  • Add in a drop or two of food coloring, glitter, or sequins (or all three!) and mix in well.
  • Work like dough and use cookie cutters, popsicle sticks, or other tools to play. Or enjoy it for what it is and roll it into snow balls!
  • Do not eat this dough. It is just for playing. Store in airtight container or plastic zipper bag. Toss when it gets hard or you’ve had enough.
  • I have seen other recipes use lotion, but I’ve only ever used it with hair conditioner so I can’t speak to how well it holds up. I say give it a shot!
  • Ladies, this is not the project to use your expensive salon hair conditioner on. I picked up the smallest bottle Target had of a cheaper option because it is going to end up in the trash. Now is definitely the time to do the smell test and pick one that smells great because this project will make your entire kitchen smell like the shower! 🙂
  • It is fairly low mess and very easy to clean up, but if you’re worried about the surface you’re using it on, you may want to put down a placemat or art mat to prevent any staining or residue being left behind.

This ended up being such a fun activity for me and my four year old. She was able to help mix it together, added in how many sequins she wanted (we did red, green, and white for a Christmas theme) and then had a blast rolling it around and playing with it at our kitchen table for a good half an hour.

I also found some $1 cookie cutters and picked them up earlier this season so we used the tree and gingerbread man to make cutouts and set up a cute scene before mashing it all up and starting over.

You can also leave it completely white and treat it like pretend snow. Perfect for a snow day activity!

Until next time,
