Cool weather, changing leaf colors, and a trip to the orchard means it’s time to make your house smell amazing with some homemade apple crisp! This easy-to-make fall dessert will have everyone in your house going back for seconds (or thirds!).
Prep time: 30 minutes
Bake time: 40 minutes
Total time: 1 hour, 10 minutes
Makes a full 9×13 pan, 12-15 servings

- 2 cups oatmeal
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 Tablespoon cinnamon
- 1 cup unsalted butter sticks (2 sticks), about room temperature
- 6-7 cups peeled, thinly sliced apples

- Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Grease a 9×13 baking pan.
- In a large bowl, mix together oatmeal, flour, sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Mix well.
- Cut butter into small squares and add to bowl. Using your hands, or a pastry blender, mix the butter into the mixture until butter has formed small pea sized balls.
- Firmly pat down half of the mixture into the 9×13 baking dish. This will be your “crust.”
- Add the apples and spread out evenly over the mixture.
- Crumble the remaining mixture over the top of the apples. Gently pat down.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes. Cool for 20-30 minutes. Serve warm.

- This recipe can easily be made gluten free by using gluten free or almond flour instead.
- You’ll want your apple slices to be very thin, like in apple pie. Sliced also bakes a lot nicer than dicing/cubing. I use an apple slicer + corer to remove the core and seeds and slice into 8 pieces, and then further slice the apples thinner using a paring knife.
- Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side for an extra savory touch.
I’ve made several different apple crisp recipes over the years and I always come back to this one that I’ve had hand-written out on a piece of scrap paper that I grabbed from my mom’s recipe card years ago.
With simple pantry ingredients, it’s near impossible to mess it up.
It’s become one of our family’s favorites that can truly be made any time of year, but is especially yummy with freshly picked apples from the orchard.
Nothing says fall quite like a warm slice of this heaven!
Until next time,
