Homemade Coleslaw

Homemade Coleslaw

The convenience of store bought is great, but nothing compares to the flavor and crunch of this simple, savory homemade coleslaw! Great for get-togethers, picnics, and with anything on the grill!

Prep time: 10 minutes

Total time: 10-15 minutes

Makes about 8 servings

  • 1/2 medium red (purple) cabbage
  • 1/2 medium green cabbage
  • 1 cup matchstick carrots

For dressing:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 Tablespoon Dijon or brown mustard
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon celery seed
  • 1 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • Salt + pepper to taste
  • Chop red and green cabbage loosely, but to bite sized pieces.
  • Add cabbages and carrots to a large bowl.
  • Mix the dressing. Combine all dressing ingredients in a small bowl and stir well.
  • Pour the dressing over the contents of the large bowl and stir to combine.
  • Serve immediately or chill until serving.
  • This will keep leftover in the fridge for 2-3 days max.
  • If you like coleslaw that has more dressing, use less of the cabbages. If you like just a little dressing, use more cabbage.
  • If you don’t want any leftovers, I highly recommend cutting the recipe in half to avoid waste.

I love making this coleslaw to go with just about anything that we grill. Burgers, hotdogs or brats, chicken drumsticks, ribs…it goes so great with everything! It is truly the ultimate summer side dish.

I also happen to think it’s better than any store bought coleslaw I’ve ever had. The freshness, crispness, and tangy flavors are unmatched! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Enjoy!
