I am Team Puppy Chow over Team Muddy Buddy, so this recipe does not use Chex cereal and I think it makes all the difference in the best way possible! I usually have to make two batches during the holidays, one for my husband and one for everyone else.
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Bake Time: 0 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes
Makes a little more than a gallon sized Ziploc bag

- 1 box of Crispex cereal (18oz Family Size box)
- 1 stick of butter
- 3-1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar (powdered sugar)
- 12 oz bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 cup creamy peanut butter

- Using a huge mixing bowl, add the entire box of Crispex cereal to the bowl (if it has a lid, huge bonus!)
- Using a microwave safe bowl, melt the chocolate chips, butter and peanut butter.
- Pour over Crispex in the large bowl. Stir carefully to combine a bit.
- Add the powdered sugar.
- Stir to coat well or, if you have a bowl with a lid, shake gently to coat evenly.
- Store in airtight container.

- Do not put your chocolate chips in the microwave and walk away. This is a very easy way to burn chocolate and the smell will linger in your house for days. Literally. Ask me how I know. It’s best to do about 30 second increments to start, stir a little, and then when it gets melty, 15 second increments until everything is melted together.
- Using a huge mixing bowl with a lid is not something everyone has, but makes the process of making this so much easier to coat the cereal with powdered sugar. This recipe came from my mom’s Tupperware selling days in the early 90’s when they included recipes with their products during the holidays, and Tupperware used to offer a huge mixing bowl with a lid. Fortunately I still have one, but I understand this isn’t standard in everyone’s kitchen, so stirring versus shaking to coat and combine is probably more realistic, in which case I recommend stirring slowly until the powdered sugar is mostly mixed in or you’ll have a mess all over you and your counter.
- It may seem like you need more powdered sugar, but I promise you don’t. You just need to keep stirring to combine it more. If you do add more, you’ll end up with a pile of loose powdered sugar at the bottom of your bowl or storage container.
- Listen, you can use Chex if you want. I won’t judge you. The reason I like Crispex is because it’s what I grew up with and I always receive tons of compliments on this recipe when I share it with others, so I stick to what I know is good. I also kind of love the hexagon shape of Crispex versus a square Chex. I think it makes a seemingly boring looking treat look a little more interesting.
Whether you are Team Puppy Chow or Team Muddy Buddy, I hope you enjoy this recipe and share it with your friends and family this holiday season!
